This guy cooperated.  It was harder than I thought to convince him / her to land, stay put, light up, and fumble around one-handed to get a pseud-macro shot with my 50mm lens that refused to focus.
I must have took hundreds of shots like this, but the shutter was too slow and I was too unsteady.  The firefly did her best to look good for the camera!

So, here's what I know about these guys:
The males fly around signalling.
The females sit on the ground or on vegetation.  Sometimes they signal back.
Sometimes, a different, larger species of female firefly will trick the smaller males into coming in for a visit.  Then she eats him.
